OFFENCES & PENALTIES
 

The Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 (MVA), Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 (CMV), State Motor Vehicles Rules and the Rules of Road Regulations, 1989 (RRR) are the legal instruments for the conduct of road traffic in India. They also prescribe penalties for offences. Some of the common offences and the consequent penalties are listed below.

Overloading a goods vehicle Rs. 2000/-plus Rs. 1000/- for every additional ton.
Breach of permit conditions Imprisonment and/or fine of Rs. 5000/-( not less than Rs. 2000/-)
